Discovering Tuscany: Villas, Vineyards & Vino

Our team of travel writers has split up to uncover the diverse treasures of Italy, with one part of the team in Emilia Romagna and the rest of us exploring the enchanting region of Tuscany. Join us on this journey as we delve into the heart of Tuscany, staying at exquisite villas and indulging in unique experiences.

Day 1: Arrival at Terre di Nunzio

Our adventure begins at Terre di Nunzio, a beautifully converted farmhouse nestled at the foot of Montepulciano, surrounded by verdant vineyards. From the moment we step onto the grounds, we are captivated by the sheer beauty of the setting. The air is filled with the fragrant scent of lavender and jasmine, while cypresses and oleanders add vibrant splashes of colour to the landscape.

We all agree that the traditional Tuscan design and feel are what make the villa so enchanting. Stepping into this villa feels like being transported to a timeless place, where the original materials—terracotta, wood and travertine marble – exude a rustic charm. Staying here with friends or extended family would be amazing, with its inviting atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The wrought iron beds and classic country-style decor are an ideal setting for curling up with a good book and letting the hours slip away.

The garden and outdoor space is equally enchanting with its breathtaking views from a large terrace and pool over vineyards, where the renowned Nobile di Montepulciano wine is produced. We all wanted to stay there for longer by the pool at sunset, the sky ablaze with colours, enjoying a leisurely barbecue and a bottle or two of exquisite local wine.

Day 2: Savouring Tuscan Wine

Our first full day in Tuscany was a journey into the heart and soul of local wine culture, starting with a visit to the renowned Tenuta Torciano in San Gimignano. Nestled in the heart of the Chianti region, this winery is surrounded by vineyards, woods and olive groves, creating a picturesque landscape that took our breath away.

This fascinating experience began with a warm introduction to the family history of Tenuta Torciano. Hearing their stories, we felt a deep connection to the land and the legacy of winemaking that has been passed down through generations. We then moved to a beautiful tasting room where we were greeted with a traditional Tuscan lunch. The room itself was a sensory delight, filled with the rich aromas of fresh bread, cured meats and fragrant olive oils. Each bite was a celebration of local flavours, perfectly paired with a selection of exquisite wines.

The Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico and the Super Tuscans were among the highlights, each wine revealing the rich flavours and traditions of the region.

Day 3: Off-Road Wine Tour

After sleeping soundly in the villa, we awoke to a leisurely morning by the pool. The gentle sound of birdsong and the warm morning sun set the perfect tone for the day ahead. With a sense of eager anticipation, we prepared for our next adventure—an off-road journey through Tuscany’s hidden gravel roads, known as “le strade bianche.”

Travelling in a Land Rover Defender, we felt a thrill of excitement as we ventured off the beaten path, gaining exclusive access to local wineries that ranged from small family-run establishments to renowned producers. This tour offered us a unique perspective on Tuscany’s natural beauty and winemaking traditions which are such a key feature of this enchanting region.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable local wine expert, we toured the vineyards and cellars, each step a journey into the world of wine production. The stories shared by our guide brought the history and passion of Tuscan winemaking to life.

The day concluded with a traditional Tuscan lunch, set in charming surroundings that epitomized the essence of Chianti. The wine tastings were a revelation and we particularly enjoyed trying other delicious Tuscan products like extra virgin olive oil and organic honey.

Day 4: Exploring Villa La Rassinata

Our journey then took us to Villa La Rassinata, a magnificent, mid-sixteenth-century villa nestled in the Arezzo hills. As we approached it, this impressive historic structure blended seemlessly with the serene beauty of its surroundings.

Once inside the villa, we could see that each floor told a story, with antique pieces and contemporary furnishings coming together in a perfect blend of past and present. The ambiance was both elegant and welcoming, making us feel immediately at home.

Stepping outside, we were greeted by the villa’s enchanting gardens, alive with the colours and scents of hydrangeas, antique roses and aromatic plants. It was a feast for the senses.

The tranquil, panoramic swimming pool area was a true highlight. With breathtaking views stretching out before us, it became our favourite spot for relaxation and reflection.

Day 5: Chianti E-Bike Tour

Our final experience in Tuscany was a Chianti E-Bike tour, a perfect outing for us as we were all keen to explore more of the countryside. The anticipation built as we set out on a scenic route that promised breathtaking views of the Tuscan hills. It was the first time for many of us on e-bikes and we were pleasantly surprised at how much more enjoyable they made the journey, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of the region without too much exertion.

As we pedaled along the winding paths, the landscape unfolded before us like a painting. The golden sunlight bathed the vineyards and olive groves in a warm glow, while the gentle breeze carried the fragrant scents of wildflowers. The e-bikes definitely allowed us to cover more ground without feeling too tired. We paused often to take in the panoramic views, each stop more stunning than the last.

After our invigorating ride, we were treated to a well-deserved picnic lunch. It was the perfect way to conclude our Tuscan journey—relishing the simple pleasures of good food, great company and sublime scenery.
