Location

Brindisi has been known since olden times as the “Gateway to the East” as it was a landing place first for the Roman troops and then for the merchants of the Serenissima. Its port still registers important connections to and from overseas countries. Recently requalified and restored, the port of Brindisi stands out as one of the major destinations for cruise and business tourism. Among the numerous historical sites to visit are the Alfonsine Castle, located on a small island at the entrance to the port, and the 13th century Swabian Castle, on the other side. There are numerous testimonies of the Roman era such as the Virgilian steps with towering Roman columns. The coastline of Brindisi is dotted with fine sandy beaches and numerous nature reserves, including the important WWF reserve of Torre Guaceto where it is possible to bathe. In the interior, the Murge and the Valle D’Itria dot the landscape with characteristic trulli and old farms..
